Preserving iOS and erasing all content iPhone 7 Plus

Hey all,

I’m trying to restore my iPhone 7 Plus to where I had last backed up to the cloud. I want everything restored INCLUDING THE IOS at 15.7 and not to the latest of 16.1; an exact copy.

I was told you can choose the “Erase all contents…” from the phone would achieve this.

It’s critical that the iOS 15.7 is preserved when I “Erase all contents “ option and eventually restore.

I find it hard to believe it will not factory reset to the latest IOS 16.1 as I found out from the web to preserve the ios, you need to hook up your iPhone to your Mac and choose the “restore” as opposed to “update” through the finder. Why would you have this option if you can simply achieve the sane thing from the very iPhone.

15.7.1 fixes a serious vulnerability that allows your phone to be taken over by a malicious app. So you might want to reconsider upgrading to 15.7.1→About the security content of iOS 15.7.1 and iPadOS 15.7.1 - Apple Support

But Erase All Content & Settings does just that; it leaves iOS as it was.

I don’t even want the 7 plus to go to 15.7.1 but preserve its current version of 15.7.

if I were to “erase all content…”, will the iOS be left alone? This is the actual question I want answered, not that it can’t go to 16.

I'm not against moving to 15.7.1 (I probably will

thx to your warning about security issues) but I was having storage space issues and I didn’t want to move to an upgrade for fear that it might leave me less space for restoration.

Wiping out your phone does not alter the version of iOS you have installed. Whatever you currently have installed is what it will revert to after you reset your phone.

An iPhone 7 can't be updated to 16.1. The highest it can go is 15.7.1

So, does this mean that when I choose to “ erase all contents” from the phone, the Apple server recognizing that it’s a 7 plus will wipe out the phone and reinstall to 15.7.1?
