iTunes Won't Recognize iPod Nano After Years of No Issues

All of a sudden, iTunes won't recognize the same iPod I've used for years with no issues. I'm running Win10 and I upgraded iTunes to the newest version (12.12.6.1) thinking this was the issue. The error when attaching my iPod is "The software required for this iPod is not installed correctly....."

I've searched and searched for solutions. I've tried everything out there. Windows Device Manager says my Portable Device driver (WPD FileSystem Volume Driver) is up2date and running. I do NOT have a usbaap1.inf or usbaap164 driver in my CommonFiles/Apple/MobileDeviceSupport/Drivers folder. That folder is empty!

I'm not sure if some recent Win10 update caused the problem. I've used this iPod for years with no issues. Its not the USB cable since my iphone connects fine and I've tried different OEM cables.

This is very frustrating. Any fixes or workaround welcomed!!!

THanks!!

(Update)

The usbaap1.inf or usbaap164 drivers ARE in my CommonFiles/Apple/MobileDeviceSupport/Drivers folder. But I can't find a way to replace the current WPD driver with the one listed above. Installing it manually is not possible...its not listed as an option to select. If that usaap1 driver is required, how do I replace one for the other??

Thanks for the reply. But been there, tried all of that. Unfortunately, Win10 won't even give me the option to replace the current driver. Any attempt to update or replace results in..."The best drivers for your device are already installed". And of course selecting "Search for updated drivers in Windows update" results in "Your system is up to date".

Hi!

Try to create another (new) user account, then go to (type in search Control Panel) the:

Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers - Right click on your PC - Device Installation Settings - No

Then download and install a slightly older version of iTunes (you can try with a newest one but just in case to troubleshoot) and give it a try (and do not use Microsoft Store version, just to exclude any misbehavior).

Also, you can check your Device Manager - View - Show hidden devices for older iPod entry. There you can look/grab the last working state driver.

Or try with the Restore Point, sure thing is you have any and if you remember when the iPod was syncing without any problems
