M1 max Macbook pro and Dell U4919DW no longer works using usbc on ventura

HI

I have a macbook M1 max

it is linked to a dell U4919DW using USBc

I know all the cables and monitor works as i have been using it for nearly a year, but yesterday I upgraded to ventura and now the monitor works as a screen via USBc but the laptop can no longer see the USB devices plugged in to the screen USB hub, so that is; keyboard, mouse, camera, any device connected to the screen is invisible to the mac.

I installed the dell update utility in the hope that a firmware update for the screen would fix it, but the app cannot see the screen at all.

I booted up my old MacBook pro (intel) and installed the same app, and using the same cables it could see the screen and updated the screen firmware to the October release.

M1 macbook still cannot see USB devices attached to the screen, sadly they are all USBa type connectors...so i cannot plug them in directly

completely stuck, i will have to go back to my intel mac for work until this is fixed.

I am back to work tomorrow and need to be able to use my screen and camera, but currently i can only use the laptop unplugged... please advise urgently

MacBook Pro 15″, macOS 12.2

Hello Gra55ykn011,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to help get your monitor working normally with your MacBook Pro again.

We'll want to start by making sure the macOS is fully updated, which can help make sure macOS is working as expected. Use these steps to check for updates: Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support

"Use Software Update

Before installing new software, it's a good idea to back up your Mac.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen:
    • Choose System Settings. Then click General in the sidebar, and Software Update on the right.
    • Or choose System Preferences. Then click Software Update.

2. If Software Update finds new software, click the Update Now or Upgrade Now button to install it.

3. Enter your administrator password, if asked. During installation, your Mac might restart, and you might see a progress bar or blank screen several times.

If Software Update says that your Mac is up to date, then no new software is currently available for your Mac model. Software Update shows only updates and upgrades that are compatible with your Mac."

This Apple Support page has additional steps to take if the display is still not recognized: If your external display isn't detected or appears blurry when connected to your Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps to resolve the issue and have the display showing as expected when connected to your MacBook Pro.

Cheers!

to get my screen to work I needed to do four things

1)have a spare laptop without Ventura on it

2) update the screen firmware using the device from step 1

3) reboot the Ventura laptop

4) now the updated firmware on the screen can talk to Ventura I am prompted by Ventura to allow the use of the external device, which I accepted

note; the “Ventura laptop” worked fine with this screen and devices until the upgrade to Ventura , luckily the screen is from a a company that updates its firmware so I was able to work out a solution. If I did not have a spare laptop (which puts me in a minority) I would not have been able to resolve this issue. So the advice should be … update all your device firmware to the latest before you upgrade to Ventura… if only there was a way to boot into Ventura before the upgrade to check this kind of compatibility.

i had a windows laptop with usbc , so I went to the dell site and downloaded the firmware, it came with its own windows installer. Only after I had applied the update and followed onscreen instructions to turn it off and also restarted Ventura did the MacBook see the monitor connected devices.

useful guide:

as mentioned above you cannot install the firmware from an m1 with Ventura, you need a different device to do the update.
