Tagging files in High Sierra

Hullo, how's it goin'?

So, I've been using tags in my files and I have. a big folder full of jpegs that I use as desktop backdrops

It's been fine overall but now I'm finding that new files will not accept a tag when I try to apply it.

Is there a limit to how many files I an tag if they're in the same folder? or is there something else I'm missing?

Start with this...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
