I have been using an iPhone XS max for the last 3 years and have a battery life of 85%. I am losing battery after installation of update 16.1. With IOS 16 I was having a good battery life of a day. But now it is draining faster.

Go to Settings, Battery and look at the usage graph. Look for big users and in particular light blue bars of apps running behind the screen

Your battery is reaching the critical point of its life, and might show unpredictable behavior.
I suggest that you have it replaced soon (do not forget to create a full backup, before having your iPhone serviced).

Same story here with XR. It worked fine with 16, with 16.1 it got worse
The above advice is also appropriate for you if your situation is identical.
