My appletv remote is the 2nd kind as pictured in the article. It doesn’t charge or at least it no longer turns on the tv.

My Apple TV remote won’t turn on the TV and it certainly won’t control the apple TV lineup. What to do?

iPhone SE, iOS 14

What is your model Apple TV? Identify your Apple TV model - Apple Support

Do you have the Apple Remote (white) (listed 2nd)? That is nostalgically old (2007–2010). It has a replaceable “button cell” battery. It is not chargeable. You may need to re-link the remote to the box after replacing the battery. Use CR2032 with this model, not BR2032. This model remote lacks a few buttons that are very useful with Apple TV (4th generation or later).

The 3rd listed is the Siri Remote, which is chargeable. Charge directly from a USB port on a computer, or charge from a power adapter in an AC outlet using the Lightning-to-USB cable (like charging an iPhone). The Siri remote is not compatible with Apple TV (3rd generation or earlier). If this remote has lost its pairing, then you may pair it again.

Apple remotes are not supposed to turn on TVs. Apple remotes turn on the Apple TV box. With Apple TV (4th generation or later), the Apple TV box can turn on other HDMI equipment through CEC.
