Erroneous iCloud Photos Upload Error Recognizing JPEGS as Folders

I am attempting to upload individual JPEG photos from a WD MyPassport for Mac external hard drive to iCloud. Accessing iCloud in Safari, when I attempt to upload the JPEG photo from the iCloud website I get the error "Uploading folders isn't supported. Only files in JPEG format can be uploaded." The upload then fails.

Why is iCloud recognizing an individual JPEG photo files as a folder and preventing me from uploading these files? I have thousands of photos I need to upload to iCloud.

For reference, I am accessing iCloud in Safari from a Macbook Air (early 2014 version) running macOS Big Sur v11.7.

Hello staxthunder,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities. We recommend that you make sure the photos are in JPEG format and review the steps below to confirm you've taken the correct steps to upload JPEG images from your computer using iCloud.com:

  1. "In Photos on iCloud.com, click the Choose Files button.
  2. Select the photos you want to add from your computer, then follow the onscreen instructions."

If the issue persists, let us know if this occurs with other photos on your MacBook Air that aren't on the external drive. Be sure to include additional error messages and any other steps that you may have tried.

Cheers!

The files are in jpeg format, they are all old photos from previous iPhones. I have reviewed the apple support link and followed all the steps. I still receive the same "uploading folders isn't supported" error when attempting to upload single JPEG files from the external hard drive to iCloud.

This error does not occur when uploading photos that are stored locally on my Macbook Air.

Hi staxthunder,

Thanks for trying those steps.

Are you able to import the photos to the Photos app on your Mac instead? If you're using iCloud Photos on your MacBook Air, the photos will still sync to your iPhone and iCloud.

If not able to import to the Photos app on your Mac, this may isolate the issue to the external drive.

Another thought, is to import to your Mac Desktop, then see if you can import to Photos app or iCloud from there. If the issue is importing directly to iCloud or the Photos app, this may alleviate that issue.

Let us know what you discover.

Thanks!
