AirPods switching not reverting back to MacBook

Devices:

Airpods 2nd Generation (Model: A2031)

iPhone 11 : iOS 16.0 (20A362)

Macbook Pro (M1) : macOS Monterey

Bluetooth setting. for Airpods : Connect Automatically on both iphone and macbook.

Playing Music on the macbook I take a call in my iphone -> airpods switch to the phone, all good here.

Once I am done with the call. I get back to my macbook to find the airpods no longer be the output device. Music is played through the speakers.

Why are my airpods not able to connect to the macbook once i am done with my call in the iphone?

If i wish to continue with apple Music on my macbook , I should be able to do that

Hi there KrArun,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand your AirPods aren't connecting to certain devices or switching as expected when audio resumes. We have some suggested steps to walk through that may help.

  1. Make sure all OS versions are fully updated.
    1. Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
    2. Update macOS on Mac - Apple Support
  2. Once you've confirmed that, you'll want to confirm your AirPods have the latest firmware.
    1. Here's how to check the firmware version for your AirPods: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support
  3. Make sure both your Mac and iPhone are signed in with the same Apple ID
  4. Reset your AirPods

Keep us updated with how it goes.

Take care.

All My devices are running on the latest update.

MacBook - macOS Monterey 12.6

iPhone - iOS 16.0 (20A362)

Airpods 2nd Gen - Firmware 4E71

Reset of airpods done as per the steps mentioned here How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro - Apple Support

Seamless switching is still not working as expected. when moving back from iPhone to mac after attending a call.

Airpods are no longer set as output devices, or automatically switch to airpods when playing music on my macbook.

Thanks for trying those steps, KrArun.

Looking at this article which talks about the automatic switching, there is a statement which says, (which we've highlighted):

Switch automatically
AirPods are connected to your iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. Sound switches between them automatically.

To switch between devices automatically1 with your AirPods (2nd or 3rd generation), AirPods Pro (1st or 2nd generation), or AirPods Max:
• Make sure that you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with the latest version of iOS or iPadOS, a Mac with the latest version of macOS, or an Apple TV with the latest version of tvOS
• Sign in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication

If you're signed in with the same Apple ID on your devices, your AirPods will switch automatically from listening to music on your iPad to answering a phone call on your iPhone, for example.

In some situations with macOS Big Sur or later, you'll see a notification about your AirPods on the screen of your Mac. Click Connect to confirm that you want your AirPods to switch to your Mac or stay with your Mac.

This looks to be what's happening, so this would be expected.

Do you see the notification so you can switch back to your Mac after the call ends?

If not, contact Apple Support for some additional assistance.
