In System Preferences, when I try printing from an Epson printer, there is a yellow dot next to the printer and it says "error." There is no link to the error message which may indicate how to solve the problem. I am running ox 12.6. The printer is an Epson 3880.

Do you have the latest printer driver?
(somewhat different software may be offered in different regions)
If the printer is connected by USB, you could try a network connection (Ethernet) instead, or vice versa.
If necessary, reset the printing system.
