Issue with external display

When I plug my external display it seems the HDMI port on my USBC hub is outputting 4K. My monitor is 1440p, so I can no longer see anything and can’t change settings. Is there a way to switch back to extended display mode to fix this? Perhaps a way to make it forget the display and start over.
