MacBook Air M1 with FileVault = No Docking Video?

Hi team,

I purchased a MacBook Air M1, activated FileVault and noticed the following behavior:

When I turn on the laptop, it goes to a login screen, but seems that it's a login prior FileVault. I does not get any screen output on my docking station, the power button of the docking also does not work.

After this login screen, the docking gets video as it always should be.

Please, how can I make my docking getting video without opening the laptop and typing my password ?

Also, there is any way to make the power button of the dock station Dell WD15 to turn on or wake up the MacBook Air M1?

Thanks a lot

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 12.6

Hello IvanCarlos,

What you're describing is expected behavior because you turned on FileVault. You are correct, when you have FileVault enabled the FileVault authentication will need to be done first before the startup disk/Mac OS operating system loads and you get to your normal login page. Once the FileVault login has completed, the startup disk/Mac OS operating system (including the drivers that control external devices) will start to load.

To use an external monitor without opening the computer and entering your FileVault password on startup, you would need to turn off FileVault. You can do so with these steps:

  1. Choose Apple menu () > System Preferences, then click Security & Privacy.
  2. Click the FileVault tab.
  3. Click Locked, then enter an administrator name and password.
  4. Click Turn Off FileVault.

Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac

Cheers!

Greetings IvanCarlos,

Check out how to encrypt data on your Mac using the steps in the following article: Protect your Mac information with encryption - Apple Support

  1. "In the Finder  on your Mac, open a window, then Control-click the item you want to encrypt in the sidebar.
  2. Choose Encrypt [item name] from the shortcut menu.
  3. Create a password for the disk and click Encrypt Disk.
  4. Important: Be sure to record and keep this password in a safe place. You cannot access the data on the encrypted disk without it.
  5. It may take some time to encrypt, depending on how much information is stored on your Mac. However, you can use your Mac as usual while the disk is being encrypted."
