Hey JMTav,
To finish that update, let's look over the guidance in the, "Get help" section of this page: Update your Apple TV - Apple Support
Take care.
Thank you for your response but I did everything on the Apple Help page before posting my message. Yes I have reset and restarted as well. The devise is still working OK but just not with the latest update, so maybe I do not need to bother?
Hello JMTav,
Thanks for getting back to us with those additional details. Next, let's try the following steps:
1. Power cycle router/modem and all network hardware, and test again.
2. Test multiple known-good networks both via Ethernet and WiFi.
If the issue persists, please reach out to Apple Support for further assistance. You can contact them using this link: Apple Support
We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
Thanks for these additional thoughts, which actually I have also done. I will have to resort to Apple Support as you suggest. I just wondered if there was a problem with the Apple TV update which could have caused this. I have successfully updated all my other devices.
If you haven't done update to TV OS16 on Apple TV 4k (1st generation). It's too unreliable and unstable. Wait for 16.1 or even 16.2. I have had trouble with mine... it has got stuck on installation and been left in a recovery loop. After endlessly trying to reboot it and reset it from recovery it randomly work and reset as new. Only to use it once and have the same issues again (being dropped into the endless recovery mode loop). I'm still in the same situation, where some times it works as normal, others it fails to turn on properly and then get dropped into the recovery mode.
Apple Support don't know any solution and since it has not usb or lightening port there is nothing that can happen. Waiting for apple to see if they can replace my device as its unusable do to this update.
TvOS16.0 wasn’t available publicly. I’ve been trying to upgrade from 15.6 to 16.1 now that it’s out and I too am getting the same message at OP. “Update was not successful please try again later.”
I’ve been trying again since yesterday’s 16.1 release.
I’ve tried restarting, I’ve tried hard restart (power), and I’ve tried reset. Mine is connected via both Wi-Fi and Ethernet and it’s not had issues upgrading to prior updates.
One thing I do wonder is if perhaps it’s a memory/storage issue. It is a 32GB 4K model and I did get a message yesterday while trying to upgrade to 16.1 about not having enough storage for it to update some of the apps that were automatically updating in the background. I don’t have many apps, just some essential apps for viewing streaming content. If I want to see the total available storage, how do I do that. I can’t find a way to see it like in iOS or iPadOS. I deleted the most recently installed app and then app updates resumed.
TVOS 16 was released publicly alongside IOS 16, with the 16.1 update just released this week. I also have the 32GB model and haven’t had any issue. You can go into settings - manage storage, to see how much space each app takes up. You just don’t get the total.
If it persists you may want to contact Apple support.
I have precisely the same problem with my ATV 4K 2nd generation. I've tried every method of resetting, and then power cycling for up to an hour. I wouldn't dismiss this as an obscure problem. After all, how many users would check to see if their ATV updated if it appeared to be working normally?
Updated myself without issue and there would be pretty widespread reporting if the update itself was problematic. Hopefully you are able to rectify with Apple support.
While the 4K doesn't have the port, it can still be taken into Apple. They have a method to issue a restore and in the event that doesn't work then a replacement could be issued.
Thanks I will give this a go. I assume I can just take in the device? No need for all the cables? As I have my cables neatly tucked out of sight. It would be a shame to have to get those out.
No problem. It would just be the power cable but I’m sure they would have access to those at the store if needed so you should be ok.
Many thanks
Update 16so
Thanks for all of the suggestions. I am taking it to the local Genius counter for assistance. I understand that they can reset it, or replace it if still an issue.
