air pods won't connect button doesn't initiate connect

My AirPods stopped working with Audible app on my iPhone XR. Worked OK with everything else. Went through the normal troubleshooting; on/off, app delete and reload, nothing worked. Then I tried to reset the load of the AirPods. I "forget this device" them on my phone, then tried the reset with the AirPods. The reset button on the AirPods does not initiate the reset or connect feature. I hold it for 10 seconds or more with the AirPods in case and connected to charging cable- they are fully charged. Now my AirPods don't work or connect to anything. When I open the case near my iPhone, a picture comes up on the phone of the AirPods case urging me to connect, but the AirPods don't respond.

Hey F14AV8TOR,

The following steps can help if you can’t connect your AirPods to your iPhone:

1. Make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch has the latest version of iOS or that your iPad has the latest version of iPadOS.
2. Put both AirPods in the charging case and make sure that both AirPods are charging.
3. To make sure that Bluetooth is on, go to Settings > Bluetooth.
4. If your AirPods are connected, make sure that they're selected as your audio device. If your AirPods appear in the list of devices but they don't connect, go to the next step.
5. Close the lid, wait 15 seconds, then open the lid. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the charging case for up to 10 seconds. The status light on the front of the charging case should flash white, which means that your AirPods are ready to connect.
6. Hold the charging case, with your AirPods inside and the lid open, next to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
7. Follow the steps on the screen of your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
8. Test your AirPods. If you still can't connect, reset your AirPods.

F14AV8TOR,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! When resetting your AirPods, are you pressing and holding the button on the back of the case with the lid on the case open? If no, you'll want to ensure you're following these steps:

How to reset your AirPods and AirPods Pro

1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Open the lid of your charging case.
4. With your AirPods in your ears and connected to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, go to Settings > Bluetooth, or Settings > [your AirPods], and tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods. If you don't see your AirPods in Settings > Bluetooth or in Settings > [your AirPods], just go to the next step.
5. Tap Forget This Device, and tap again to confirm.
6. With the lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.
7. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Follow the steps on your device's screen.

Hope this helps!

Have a great day.
