That's mistaken, Keyman is very actively maintained and when they say "and later" they mean it. It works with all those MacOS versions and probablly Ventura as well.
Q. What versions of macOS will Keyman work with?
A. Keyman is compatible with OS X Yosemite (10.10) and later.
This Application states OS Yosemite Released in October 16, 2014 which is probably a 32 Bit Application.

Tested to be working in versions macOS up to and including Monterey 12.6.

The app installs software for keyboard functionality. Specific keyboard files can be installed through the Configuration menu option (separate downloads, as needed, including the Amharic one. For the Amharic keyboard layout, it also installs three fonts (AbyssinicaSIL-Regular.ttf, AbyssinicaSIL-Connected-Regular.ttf, Brana-Regular.ttf).
Yet it appears that copy-pasting Amharic text in TextEdit defaults to rendering Amharic script in the Kefa font, which is bundled with macOS itself (/System/Library/Fonts/Supplemental/Kefa.ttc).

That's what you would expect, isn't it? You can just change it to AbysssinicaSIL if you prefer that one.

I didn’t know what to expect for defaults for non-Latin scripts, nor know how macOS makes that call when there are several compatible fonts. I expected something different than my TextEdit default of Avenir (was Helvetica), which is Latin-only. Possibly one of the newly installed Amharic fonts — apparently not.
E.g. Simplified Chinese/Traditional Chinese/Japanese defaults to the PingFang SC font. Thai defaults to Thonburi font. Korean renders in Apple SD Gothic Neo. Odia renders in Noto Sans Oriya. Where is that set? Or is it the compatible first find? Is it tried alphabetically by font name and font location?
I didn’t know about Amharic or Keyman before today.

Location is important -- the default will normally be the one in System/Library/Fonts. Also there can be a .plist involved, see this article.
Amharic font is one of oldest alphabet in the world, has its origin from Geez that parallel with Greek next from Hebrew or Aramaic. It has 33 main alphabet each on of them followed or inserted by seven easy to memorize, support or facilitators, similar as "vowels" in the latin.

Yes.
MacOS has already had an Amharic font, called Kefa, for many years, so there is no need to download one.
MacOS Monterey also has an Amharic keyboard, so there is no need for another one.
Does what Apple provides work ok for you?
Install and validate fonts in Font Book on Mac - Apple Support (CA)
