MacBook Pro running macOS Monterey scrolling bug

MBP M1 Pro, running Monterey 12.6

I'm seeing very noticeable scrolling jerkiness in Mail (message text pane) and Safari. When using two-finger vertical scrolling via the trackpad, the window will occasionally scroll very slightly to the left or right, even though there is no horizontally scrollable content. Then, the window jumps back to where it was when the misbehavior started, and resumes vertical scrolling. Normally, even diagonal movement on the trackpad translates into pure vertical scrolling in such a window.

I haven't noticed this misbehavior in apps like Acrobat - not to say it's definitely not there, but I notice it MUCH more in Safari and Mail's message text pane.

Hello d.s.cobb,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with scrolling in Mail and Safari on your Mac. Have you tried restarting your Mac? This simple step resolves a multitude of issues: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

  • "On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > Restart.
  • If you don’t want app windows that are open to reopen when your Mac restarts, deselect “Reopen windows when logging back in.”"

If this doesn't help, test to see if it occurs in another user account: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
