Hello ksaro1,
To help isolate the issue, disconnect external devices connected to your Mac and then test the behavior. Additionally, testing with an external reader can further help isolate the behavior.
Reach out to Apple Support directly for further assistance with the behavior if the issue persists: Contact Apple for support and service - Apple Support
Kind regards.
Unfortunately the internal HDD that the iMac model that I have is that slow that it renders the iMac unusable. Therefore, I've had to attach an external SSD as the boot disk so that I can use my iMac. So I can't remove all external devices or my iMac won't boot.
I've raised this issue mainly in case others also are seeing this same behaviour. This behaviour has only occurred since I've been using Monterey. It could also be a H/W issue that just coincided with the Monterey installation.
Also, based on personal experience with the Apple Support infrastructure and their results on other issues, I won't be spending any of my time troubleshooting this issue.
