Image Capture missing photos

I am trying to transfer photos from my iPhone 12 to my MacBook. When I look at the images on my iPhone through the Image Capture application on my MacBook, there are many photo files missing.

The files missing in Image Capture still appear in the Photos application. It appears to be related to duplicate file names. For example, there are three files with the name IMG_9731.JPG - one from July 2020, one from Jan 2022 and one from Sep 2022. All three of those files appear in the Photos app, but only one of them appears in Image Capture.

I do not want to use the Photos app to import the files to my MacBook because that leads to issues with video files and capture date metadata.

Any advice? Thanks!

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 12.3

I'm not sure which problems you want to avoid, but you could try this: Make an entirely new photo library; try importing using photos; if that works transfer them to your main photo library.

To make a new photo library you quit Photos; option click the Photos app, select create new, and name it something. Then, with Photos open, go to Preferences and choose Use as System Photo Library. That way, new photos will come into this new library.

If that works it won't mess up your normal library.
