Should I download newest Mac upgrade?

I have a iMac late 2015 with 373.7 GB available of 1 TB. Can I download the newest upgrade without problems? Last time it costed me over $300 to get it to finish the update. It just stopped. Should I just have someone with more knowledge than I to do this for me.

iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.5

I've had problems with installing system updates and upgrades before. I've had better luck from the Safe Mode because I evidently have some 3rd party software that interferes with the installation so try the following:

#1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3-5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

#2 - go to the System/Software Update preference pane and begin the download.

#3 - run the installer from the Safe Mode.

Whoever charged you $300 for an update is a thief.

Updates are straight forward. There should be no reasons to pay any one for them.

In general the updates should complete without any issue.

Perhaps you can consult with someone more knowledgeable if you don't think you can do it on your own. But paying someone, should hardly be necessary for an update, even one that failed to complete.
