Too late to upgrade from Mac OS High Sierra?

Have 2017 iMac. Never updated OS from High Sierra (some concern/fear due to something we heard of inability to use Adobe audio software early on). Is it too late -- will I destroy my iMac? Is there enough memory on this older iMac to do latest upgrade? Yes I do hard disc back up LaCie on weekly basis. Nervous about attempting update - afraid it will destroy computer. Thanks in advanced for info/help.

Mojave (10.14) will run many 32-bit apps. Catalina and up will not run them.

Catalina is no longer one of "the most recent three", and Big Sur will fall off that list pretty soon. So your best bets would seem to be to

  • Stick with High Sierra or Mojave (if 32-bit apps are important to you), or
  • Upgrade to Monterey or Ventura (if running a current OS and current applications is more important)

A 2017 iMac can update all the way to macOS Ventura.

If you are still running High Sierra, you no doubt have 32 bit apps that will not work on Ventura.

You will need to determine which apps you still need and find 64 bit version for them that can work on Ventura.

You can use apps like https://www.stclairsoft.com/Go64/ for that.

No, it will not destroy the iMac at all. Ventura will run fine and shout not cause any issues to the computer.

Wether it has enough memory, is hard for us to say, but unless you have removed memory from it at some point, it should have at least 8GB of RAM memory from factory which is enough to run Ventura. Though 16GB is recommended.

Again, you will not destroy the computer. A supported updated would be released if it had any chance of "destroying" the target computers.
