in the last three days I was unable to download photos from my Iphone(SE 3rd generation) into my IMAC because the format is not recognized;as a matter of fact the last letters of the photos are....HEIC?whats wrong?thank you fpr advice,CM

Sounds like your iPhone SE 3rd generation has the wrong setting at Settings > Camera > Formats.
You want "Most Compatible" if your iMac cannot handle HEIC format.

Plenty of threads here with the same problem on older versions of MacOS. So far I’ve not seen a solution other than to upgrade. If you can’t upgrade then I’d suggest contacting support directly (top right of this page)
Hopefully Apple will issue a fix in the next IOS
