I updated my phone to the latest iOS 15.7...but when I try to update my apple watch SE, I get an error message..it reads "Unable to check for update..an error occurred while checking for a software update". Bluetooth is on, WiFi is on, phone is up to date. Any ideas?
Thank you! I did not realize there was a further update past 15.7 as my phone read..up to date..but then when I went back in and asked again after reading your reply, I saw the 16.2. I updated and now it appears my watch is also updating. Many thanks.

If you're trying to update to WatchOS9 then you need an iphone that is running ios16,which is an iphone 8 or higher.
