Apple Watch Update issues.

I am trying to update my Apple Watch Ultra and Apple Watch 7 to the latest version. When I do it through my iPhone, I get a message that I need update my phone, but it is already updated to the latest version (and only available version) which is IOS 16.7.2. When I try to update just through my watch, I get the message "Unable to check for Update - An error occurred while checking for a software update". I have unpaired and paired both watches multiple times, but nothing has worked. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

No, I cannot work around this issue. As previously mentioned, I need to have IOS 17 on my IPhone to update my Apple Watch. Since I have an iPhone 8 (which cannot update to IOS 17), I’m out of luck. The Apple Support person I spoke with suggested I provide feedback to Apple Tech that this issue needs to be fixed so I don’t need to get a new phone, but they have not responded to me nor corrected the problem. So my Apple Watch Ultra is patiently waiting to update….

This is an absolute scandal. I would never have bought the watch if I was told I couldn’t update it. I am sure this is contrary to EU regulations too.

You need an iPhone XS or newer to upgrade to iOS 17. And the Apple Watch needs the iPhone to be iOS 17 before it will upgrade to watchOS 10.

So are you saying we have to buy a new phone if we have an iPhone X? But when I bought my watch last year, it said it was compatible with my iPhone. Now I am desperate to update my watch due to the battery drain issue, but I can’t update it from my iPhone and I can’t update it from my watch because I keep getting the error message.
