Conflict with synchronizing Audio and MIDI In GarageBand

I have been using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen2 audio interface for several months without any issues when suddenly upon playback or recording I am receiving this error message:"Sample Rate 41000 recognized" along with this detail error message: "Conflict with synchronizing Audio and MIDI. Conflict between GarageBand and external device." This happens even though I am not using any MIDI keyboard or other MIDI device and only recording audio...Only Scarlett2i2.

NOTE: I opened and played that very same GarageBand Project in my MacBook Pro that is not connected to the Scarlett interface and there were no problems or error messages at all. Therefore, I am inclined to believe that the Mac Mini developed an issue with the Scarlett 2i2 but only months after successful use.

Hello, najrellim.

With the error you are getting, we agree that there appears to be some type of conflict of compatibility, even if it was working as expected previously. To start off, we advise that you restart your Mac (Shut down or restart your Mac) and make sure it's fully updated (Update macOS on Mac). Once those are done, please test this issue. These two simple steps can help resolve a lot of unexpected behaviors.

If this persists, reach out the manufacturer to see if there is any firmware or other updates that may be available to help with this.

Let us know if we can help with anything else at all. Thanks and have a fabulous day!

Thanks for getting back to us, najrellim. It's appreciated.

Also, you’re correct, najrellim. When an issue doesn’t happen in a new user account, please test the issue by removing any login items. Then, add them back one at a time testing after each one: Remove login items to resolve startup problems on your Mac - Apple Support. The information on this page is for macOS Catalina. If you’re Mac is on a different macOS, you can change it using the drop-down at the top.

Also, since test has been completed, feel free to remove the new user you added.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

Thank you very much for your suggestions. I tried those first, but no joy (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen2 audio interface has no firmware nor drivers for Mac). I have also tried switching USB ports, but that didn't improve matters.

I am considering next to try disabling ALL of my plugins, then see if that helps identify the culprit. Would that be more expediant than doing a Time Machine restore to a date before the problem occurred? If I did do a Time Machine restoration, I would first backup my Garageband project to a free standing storage hard drive.

Hi Snick,

I checked and found that to optimize my Mac for GarageBand, one of the recommendations was to remove all Start Up programs. So; I had already done that last year, but thanks for reminding me to check that. I am going to procede on the hypothosis that one of my GarageBand third party plugins must be the culprit. Some of those require security access to my Document files or my Library; by opening GarageBand under the new User ID I created, I will look through the GarageBand project to see which plugin(s) didn't load. That will let me zero in on the plugin(s) causing the issue.

Through process of elimination, I have determined the plugin Amplitube to be the cause of the problem.

After deactivating all other effects plugins, the problem with playback slowdown, distortion & cracking persisted. Once Amplitube was deactivated on each channel in use, the problem ceased.

I will pursue the matter with Amplitube to see if there is a compatibility issue between it and the most recent Catalina update.
