iphone 14 side button does not lock screen

My iPhone SE on iOS15 and earlier (and all of my earlier iphones) would reliably enter "lock-screen" mode when pressing the side button (or top button on older models). My iPhone 14 running iOS 16.0.1 does not. About 1/5 of the time it enters lock screen the first attempt. I have found it to be reliable to enter lock screen by pressing the side button and one of the volume buttons, but this is an awkward gesture, particularly when using the phone one-handed. Any solution?

Hello waffletower,

The ability to lock the iPhone with the side button hasn't changed with the iPhone 14. This information is outlined in the following article.

Use the side, Home, and other buttons on your iPhone - Apple Support

Since the function isn't working as expected, you'll want to restart the iPhone using the steps listed below. While restarting is a simple step, it can be very beneficial in resolving many issues, including the side button not putting the iPhone to sleep. These steps can also be found in the following article.

  1. "Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power-off slider appears.
  2. Drag the slider, then wait 30 seconds for your device to turn off. If your device is frozen or unresponsive, force restart your device.
  3. To turn your device back on, press and hold the side button (on the right side of your iPhone) until you see the Apple logo."
