Extended display on iPad frozen

By using iPad as Extended display wirelessly, it always freezes after a short time, except Sidebar and Touch Bar.

By reconnecting manually, the extended display may show a square with the average colour of the wallpaper or only black.

And every-time the iPad auto-locked or the screen is turned off by pressing the top button, within a minute the Mac will show „device time out“ or (-1010) error and if turn on iPad screen again, it shows „lost connection“.

Thanks for trying that and getting back to us, yifan21. It’s appreciated.

We have a few more things to try. Please test the issue after each step or pair of steps:

Restart both devices:

Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

Restart your iPad - Apple Support

Toggle Handoff off and back on for both devices:

Use Handoff to continue tasks on your other devices - Apple Support

Toggle Bluetooth off and back on for both devices:

Mac - Click the Bluetooth status icon in the Control Center or menu bar.

iPad - Open the Settings app and disable/re-enable from there and not the Control Center.

Restart your Wi-Fi router(s) and modem

Forget the Wi-Fi network on the Mac and iPad and reconnect:

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.

Now I find out if sidecar is kept active by preventing MacBook or iPad Display from turning off during the period of which it usually starts freezing, it lasts well over 35 hours without freezing, which otherwise would have started freezing already after 31 hours after restarting iPad.

After 42 hours I let the Mac sleep, after Mac woke from sleep, iPad showed “connecting” for a long time without really connect.

The disconnect and reconnect of sidecar triggered then the freezing.

Hello yifan21,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. Which iPadOS is installed on your iPad? Settings > General > About.

Which macOS version is installed on your Mac? Apple Menu > About This Mac.

To get started, Le's make sure you meet the following requirements:

-You can use Sidecar wirelessly, but to keep your iPad charged during use, connect it directly to your Mac with the USB charge cable that came with your iPad.
Additional requirements
1-Both devices must be signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication. Sidecar does not support Managed Apple IDs.
2-To use Sidecar wirelessly, both devices must be within 10 meters (30 feet) of each other and have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Handoff turned on. Your iPad must not be sharing its cellular connection and your Mac must not be sharing its internet connection.
3-To use Sidecar over USB, your iPad must be set to trust your Mac.

Also, check out this helpful link for information about Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues which can affect Sidecar performance when using Sidecar wirelessly:

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.
