How to pair peripherals without Preferences access…?

I have an ancient (2010) Mac I want to convert into a Chromebook, but when I turned it on, it couldn’t recognize its old keyboard or mouse, no matter what I do—and I can’t get to a Preferences screen

Try using a wired USB KB, even a cheap PC one will work...

Win key = Mac CMD key

Alt key = Mac Option key.
