power adapter US and international swap?

Hi all,

I have a 85W MagSafe 2 power adapter from an older model MacBook Pro. I also have a newer 61W USB C power adapter. Is it safe to swap an International plug/cable to the newer model power adapter. See photos. The older adapter and cable is for SE Asian countries, it is the 85W MagSafe 2. I would like to keep the "international" 2 prong plug/cable to use with my newer 61W USB C Power Adapter. This will let me charge my laptop over there using the 2 prong cable with the USB C connection. These power adapter plug cables/slots are meant for swapping components, but I wanted to double check.

3 photos:

  1. International power adapter, 2 prongs and mag safe connector
  2. US power adapter, standard grounded US plug and USB C connector
  3. internal shot of both cables

In 3rd photo, both cables are 2.5Amp. US is 125W, vs 250W for International. I am assuming this is where there might be a problem/issue.

Does this make sense?

Thanks!

I'm assuming your mean 120V, vs. 250V ... correct? Regardless, if you look closely at the fine print on the power adapter, you should see that it covers that range, albeit very hard to read. You should be able to swap out the proper wall outlet plug for your region.

The computer is running the entire powering and charging process. it only draws as much power as it needs.

Using a power adapter that is larger than the spec has never been an issue, as long as everything fits together without being forced. The computer only draws what it needs.

Using a power adapter smaller than specified can cause some problems, but is usually not dangerous -- it may not perform adequately when trying to run AND charge.

Using a power adapter at least as large as specified is the 'Approved Method'.
