MFA codes via SMS don't notify me.

I have my iPhone Messages set to notify me always on lock screen, Notification Center and Banners. This works fine for any normal text messages. But, strangely, I don't get any alert from two factor authentication texts. The message is there if I tap on the phone screen, but there is never an alert. What might be causing this?

iPhone 13, iOS 16

Hi Todd_G,

To begin, check your notification settings: Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

"To get notifications, connect to a Wi-Fi or cellular network. If you still don't get notifications for a specific app, try these steps:

  1. Make sure that the app supports notifications. Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, and make sure that Allow Notifications is on.
  2. If you have notifications turned on for an app but you're not receiving alerts, you might not have Banners selected. Go to Settings > Notifications, select the app, then select Banners.
  3. Make sure that you’re signed in to your Apple ID
  4. Make sure that Do Not Disturb is off
  5. If you’ve recently installed an app or restored from a backup, open the app to start getting notifications."

Additionally, check for any iOS updates and try restarting the iPhone:

Restart your iPhone

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If still not delivering, please clarify if these are notifications from Apple Two Factor Authentication or incoming texts with codes.

Regards.

Thanks for getting back to us, Todd_G. It’s appreciated.

If you’re not receiving Multi-Factor Authentication codes from Microsoft, these are the steps that they provide to correct the issue: Microsoft account security info & verification codes

If those steps didn’t help and the MFA codes are from Microsoft, we recommend reaching out to them here: Contact - Microsoft Support

If the codes are coming from another company, we recommend contacting them.

If you’ve already reached out, we still recommend contact Apple Support to look into this issue further with you: Get Support

All the best.

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your response, however I do not believe your comments are particularly applicable here. As I noted in my post title, the missing notifications are regarding MFA codes received as SMS messages (i.e. not Apple authentication notifications); and I also noted that notifications for my "Messages" app are definitely on, and that notifications for any other type of text message (both SMS and iMessage) are working (i.e. therefore notifications disabled notifications, do not disturb, not signed into Apple ID, etc., must obviously not be the cause).

My iOS is always up-to-date, and my iPhone is restarted approximately once a week.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help with this!

No, I have not. I would note that it appears to occur amongst several third parties; also, I wasn't aware that it would be possible for someone to construct and send an SMS message in a manner which can override the notification settings of the Messages app on my iPhone.

Do you happen to know of any specific instances of notification failures resulting from the actions of the sender of an SMS? If so, I would like to know as that might help point me in the right direction!

Thanks!
