If my iPhone which is a 6s won't update to iOS16 how do I update my iWatch to iOS9?

So there is no way currently that I can manually update my Apple Watch Series 6 to iOS9 using my iMac? I'm hoping that there will be an alternative rather than being held hostage and being force to upgrade my iPhone.
You will need an iphone 8 or higher.
No the minimum spec for WatchOS9 is at least an iphone 8 running ios16.
