My automatic updates are not updating. What am I doing wrong?

Is your Mac work related? If it is you might not want to automatically update when system updates come along in case there's some incompatibilities with software and you may be in the middle of a project. If it is work related having an external clone of your boot drive to install updates on to test is a good idea.

Just some food for thought.

Uninstall any antivirus, cleanup and VPN apps

Shutdown all running apps
