Fed Up W Photos

I have been having so much trouble with Apple photos for I would say seven or eight years now – – and to be clear I'm talking about the Apple Photos app that used to be called iPhoto. Anyway I have spent soooooooo, soooooooo long trouble shooting that I really just want an alternative and wanted to know if any there was anything out there anyone liked. It's so strange that the iOS photos app is so awesome and pretty much works like a dream!

I'm on a 2021 iMac, running Big Sur, not that it really matters in this case.

These are excellent questions, so thank you. I have a DSLR but I find myself using it less and less and just doing more with the iPhone. Moreover, as an artist I am using my own photos less and less and collecting photos from all kinds of sites and editing and working with them to create new images. I stopped adding any photos (except ones on my iPhone roll) to iPhoto a few years ago because they so often got caught in the s-l-o-w Photos UI, which beachballs into force quit every other time I open it. (And just trying to get an accurate count of photos right now, it is beachballing again.) I think it's about 400,000, but I would guess 1/4 of these are duplicates.

I am trying to keep pics low in size and quality — and as far as price goes, I'm far from liquid but I can rustle up some solid for the right software.

thanks again for your questions — they are better than many people's answers.

That's a significant volume, but in trying to keep pics at low quality makes you unusual. However the volume pushes you towards the pro end of the market. Worth looking at:

On1 Photo Raw - this has both a permanent licence and a subscription model. It has a good built-in editor

Adobe Lightroom Classic - the industry standard. Only available as a subscription, but the subscription includes Photoshop as well

Mylio is closer in feel to iPhoto/Photos, but very good, especially when sharing images across devices. Subscription only.

Photo Supreme is unusual as it has no editing tool - just very good at managing a lot of photos. Might work if you have a preferred editor already. Once off licence.
