Changing paper orientation when printing

This question was asked in another thread and never resolved. I have the same issue. There seems no way to dictate the paper orientation when printing a photo. Why not? Or, more importantly, HOW can I force it into the orientation I want? Sometimes even printing the same sized photo, say a square 5"x5" will yield different orientations - one will get printed horizontal and another in portrait mode. I want the paper oriented vertically for more vertical pictures. And, regardless, sometimes I might want a 5x7 oriented differently on the page and I'm unable to dictate my choice. They appear in preview as the correct orientation, but print horizontally. What's up, Apple?

That may be a bug in Photos as I get the same issue when trying to use the 5 x 7 or 4 x 6 layout. However, all you need to do to work around it is the following:

1 - pick the paper size (in the demo below it's 8.5 x 11).

2 - select the Custom layout.

3 - enter the photo size you want to print in the middle of the page.

4 - to change orientation of the photo click on the dual arrows between the 5 and 7 fields.

Thank you so much. I'll try it out when reunited with my printer.

Sometimes the image appears in preview just how I want it to appear on the page, but then prints with different orientation. I'll be thrilled if this works. Much appreciated.

Thank you for the helpful tip. It worked fairly well for some vertical and hoizontal images on vertical page orientation. Previously it printed square images and smaller hoizontal images on a vertical page most of the time (what I need currently). Now it prints that way SOMETIMES, but today not at all. Square images that I have printed from this same set-up are printed on horizontal pages, nothing changes it. Time to move completely to lightroom where these things are in my control.
