Collaborate on iMovie editing

I'm working on an iMovie project (3-5 min video, multiple gigabytes) with someone 3,000 miles away. We don't necessarily have to collaborate on the editing (though that would be nice). Instead, I'm trying to transfer the project to her so she can finish the editing process. I created a new library of the project on Dropbox, copied the project to it, and my colleague was able to open all the source files, but not the video project itself.

I'm not sure if it's possible to share an iMovie project this way. And if not, what other options do we have short of copying the file to a hard drive and mailing it to her.

Hi,

Unfortunately snail mail or other postal service is the only way to do it. The problem is that an iMovie project that is still in editable form must reside in an iMovie library. A project cannot exist as an independent file outside of an iMovie library. So you must copy to an external hard drive the iMovie library that contains the editable iMovie project (or create a new library and copy your project into it) and then transfer the library. The next step is to snail mail the drive. That's the only way to do it. The drive can be a thumb drive. Whatever external drive that you use must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS in order to store an iMovie library on it. Your colleague must have an Apple Computer and be running the same exact version of iMovie that was used to create the project.

Before copying to the external hard drive or to a newly created library you should open your project browser screen (where your projects are displayed as icons), click on the project icon and do a File/Consolidate Project Media. That will insure that the media used in the project will travel with the project. If you are transferring the library in which the project was created you should also click on the library's name in the project side bar and do a File/Consolidate Library Media. You may get a message saying that there is no media to be consolidated, but that's O.K. You just want to make sure that all of your media goes with the project.
