I tried the process with a friend, which is not the actual collaborator, therefore he was not editing the movie. I'm waiting for input from the collaborator to know if all works as we would like to, i.e that we all can fully edit and modify any feature of the imovie. I write here the steps, which I can complete when/if I get more input.

Here is the way it worked for me:

  • I used Ventura 13.6 and Imovie 10.3.8. My friend had Imovie 10.3.9.
  • In Imovie be sure to have the project you want to share in a library with only that project. This is to reduce the size of the library to share.
  • In "Projects" select the right Library.
  • Click on the movie you would want a collaborator to edit.
  • Under the tab File > go to "Consolidate Project media". Then click OK. It could be you get There is no media to consolidate, which I understand it's because it has been already consolidated.
  • Go to the library folder, which I have it on the Macintosh HD /Users/Ana/Movies/iMovie/ iMovie Library test new.imovielibrary.
  • Click on the folder, and from the menu choose "Compress" This generated a .zip file
  • You can click in the zip file, select Share, choose Collaborate (on the window that opens), the I used invite with link, then add the email(s) of the collaborators. I also tied copying the zip file and pasted it my Google drive, and shared it from there.

A project in editable form cannot exist independently but must reside in an iMovie library. To transfer the project to someone else one must transfer the iMovie library that contains the project. For this purpose it often is helpful to create a new library and populate it with the one project. Or, if you prefer, you can simply transfer the entire original library. In your case, possibly the library has only one project in it, so the second option might be fine.

So, let's say you have an iMovie library located on Mac #1, that has an iMovie project in it that you want to transfer to Mac #2. Create a new library on Mac #1, transfer the project to it, and then transfer the new library containing the project to an external drive or thumb drive that is plugged into Mac #1. (Or, as mentioned above you can skip creating a new library and instead transfer the original library.) The external drive, or thumb drive, must be formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or APFS. Then you physically transfer the external drive or thumb drive containing the library and project from Mac #1 to Mac #2. Both computers must be Macs. To edit the project Mac #2 must be running the exact same version of iMovie that was used to create the project.

Before transferring (or copying) the library or project, do the following procedures. On Mac #1, open iMovie and click on the library's name in the side bar, and do an Edit/Consolidate Library Media. Then go to the project browser and select the project and do an Edit/Consolidate Project Media. This is to make sure that you carry over to Mac #2 all of the media used in the project.

The above procedure is a bit archaic, but unfortunately an iMovie library cannot be stored in the Cloud, so using the Cloud is not an option.

Just be sure that both Macs are using the same iMovie version.

ADDENDUM: As a somewhat limited workaround, you can share out the project as a movie file, and then transfer the Movie file by email or AirDro[ from one Mac to another, where you can import it into a new iMovie project, do some lmited editing, and then share it out and transfer the shared Movie back to the original Mac.

Yes, I hadn't thought of saving the library as a .zip file and transferring it that way. After uploading it from Mac I think that you would need to download it on Mac 2.

If you have time, please post back with the procedure that you followed and the results that you got. It might help others who want to collaborate in editing an iMovie project.

If you have any more of this to do in the future you may be interested in a video produced by Ripple Training who are well known for training videos for Final Cut Pro. They explain a file transfer process from Blip

I should say that I do not know how well this works for transferring iMovie Libraries but it appears from Ripple Training to be very successful in transferring FCP Libraries.

You may want to experiment to see if it fits your needs for iMovie.
