When using air play do I have to play program on both my TV and my iPad?
Is there a way of playing apple tv plus program on TV with captions without using air play ?
Most devices that support AirPlay receiving, can also have the Apple TV app on it to stream directly without a separate AirPlay sending device. Verify if your device is on the list.
Apps that offer in-app AirPlay controls, those can switch apps or have the screen sleep while continuing streaming. Other apps that rely on screen mirroring video capture, those will need to have to retain focus on the program on the sending device. So it depends on what you want to stream.

Subtitles should be available in the Apple TV app on your TV via Roku. Change subtitles or languages for videos in the Apple TV app or iTunes Store - Apple Support

I can directly stream Apple tv Plus programs to my TV via Roku. My problem is that
in order to have the subtitles appear (which are on my iPad) - I find that I have to resort to Air Play which in turn means
that program is playing simultaneously on my iPad and my TV. It would nice to
eliminate the need to simultaneously play on the iPad.
Do I have to simultaneously air play on both my iTV and my ipad? Can captions be displayed on tv without AirPlay.
