How to get rid of a box in which my tiny cursor is held prisoner? 15" MacBook Pro 2019

I updated to latest Monterrey 12.5.1 yesterday, so do not think it's a security issue, but a Voice Over one (altho I didn't use Voice).

I was trying to find online how to type an upside down question mark. Suddenly a 2x1" box appeared with my tiny cursor inside it. I can move it around and use the little cursor to place a point at which to start typing. Very cumbersome. The little box has 2 lines around it, and it reflects what's underneath it VERY LARGE, so it's hard to pinpoint things.

How do I get rid of that box and gain control of my real cursor again? (It was something I typed...like option, command, + and a question mark. That's when the box appeared)

Thank you, John Galt

I de-selected everything under Use Keyboard Shortcuts. I don't remember ever selecting them!

I got out of it by talking with one of Apple's Star Assistants (like you), and we did it a little different way, but got the job done. It won't happen again, especially with this new setting.

And I made note of the Upside Down Question Mark, in case I need it again.

dialabrain also sent help; THANKS to all of you!
