Can't update to Monterey 12.5.1 on my 2019 Intel-based MacBook Pro

I have tried a number of times to update my 2019 Intel-based MacBook Pro to Monterey 12.5.1, but I haven't been able to get beyond the point of "preparing." The update downloads, but about 5 minutes into the "preparing" stage, I get an error message with the suggestion to check my internet connection and try again. I have had no problems with my internet connection recently.

Have you tried rebooting the machine?

You can try a Safeboot and try again your update.

I just tried a safe boot of my computer and attempted to download and install the update. It was able to download the update, but while preparing the update my computer crashed as my fan made a whirring sound. This is the report:

Are you using an external monitor...(?)

Try unplugging all peripherals and compare your results when updating.

Update: I don't know if this will help anyone, but last night I got an auto-generated message that my update to 12.5.1 was ready to be installed. I guess the update was automatically downloaded, and al I had to do was restart my computer. After 12.5.1 was installed, there were a number of app crash reports on my desktop. I restarted my laptop again, and it has been working fine since then.
