My preview app will not create a text box. Attempt what I have done 1000 times.... I hit mark up, click on the Aa dropdown, choose a font, and I get nothing. Anyone else have this issue and find a resolution?

Yes I was clicking that box.
I did get a resolution though. I am embarrassed to say... "Have You Tried Turning It Off And On Again?"

Did you click the Text icon or choose Text from the Tools > Annotate menu after choosing the font?
