Recycle an old Mac

I have a 2009 iMac that has a dead hard drive and therefore doesn’t boot properly. I’m inclined to just recycle it and be done with it. Will Apple take care of this? Any files are already backed up and appear on another machine that is already in operation.

RIP: My 2012 iMac hard drive has died I have a 2012 27” iMac with 1G memory. Apple stores tells me they don’t make the disk drives for these models anymore. I called around to some locale repair shops and they said they can replace the HD with a compatible one for around $500. Should I get this HD replaced? What is the replacement for this HD? Or should I just scrap this idea and buy a new computer? This computer looks new so it would be a shame to just recycle it at the Apple Store.

How do I erase an old MacBook? I want to recycle a MacBook 2,1, running Snow Leopard. I have the SL install disk, but nothing that will serve as a boot disk. Starting in Recovery mode doesn’t work, as far as I can see. Disk Utility, of course, won’t erase the boot disk. Wasn’t there a network boot at one time?

Yes, Apple will accept the iMac for recycling. Just take it in to the nearest Apple store, sign some papers and your're done.
