How do I erase an old MacBook?

I want to recycle a MacBook 2,1, running Snow Leopard. I have the SL install disk, but nothing that will serve as a boot disk. Starting in Recovery mode doesn’t work, as far as I can see. Disk Utility, of course, won’t erase the boot disk. Wasn’t there a network boot at one time?

The Original SL install DVD should work as a boot disc.

Hold down the C key while starting up the Mac with the SL disc inside the drive and it should attempt to boot from the DVD drive.

Alternatively hold down the Option key to start up at the boot manager and see if the DVD drives appears as an option.

Either the drive is bad or the disc is bad. Have you attempted to read the disc on another computer and to see if its readable?

Outside of that, you won't be able to erase the drive if you can't boot into something from the CD or the recovery partition if one exists. That model of Mac cannot boot from USB, and if you can't load the recovery partition then there's nothing to use to erase the drive.
