What are some of the details about the security issue I am hearing about today?
And what can an iPhone user with an older iOS due to update?
My phone is maxed out at iOS 12.5.5

If you're using an iPhone 6 or earlier, you'r currently on the latest software version available with iOS 12.5.5. There would be no way to update further.
