AirPods Max loses connection between uses

My AirPods Max frequently lose connection with my phone. Not while I am using them, but after I have used other earphones or the iPhone speakers. The AP Max drops off the Bluetooth device list in the phone. The phone can’t find it. Restarting the phone doesn’t help. Only solution so far is to reset the AP Max to factory settings and then it will re-pair with the phone.

Hello gdmedia,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with your AirPods Max not automatically connecting to your device when you want to use them. Check out the information here about automatic switching: Switch your AirPods to another device - Apple Support

"Switch automatically

AirPods are connected to your iPhone and Apple Watch at the same time. Sound switches between them automatically.

To switch between devices automatically1 with your AirPods (2nd generation), AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max:

If you're signed in with the same Apple ID on your devices, your AirPods will automatically switch from listening to music on your iPad to answering a phone call on your iPhone, for example."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Good afternoon gdmedia,

We understand how frustrating it can be to troubleshoot an issue that is intermittent. The next time this happens, we would suggest you speak with an AppleCare technical advisor directly so they can help you.

Click the link below, choose the phone number for your region from the list, and call when it is convenient. Refer the advisor to this discussion ( AirPods Max loses connection between uses - Apple Community) so that you don't have to repeat the information you've already provided.

Contact Apple for support and service

Take care.

OK, but this is just the official response. Of course, all that stuff is covered. I imagine it's all covered with most of the people who are having these problems. (I read that there are many with similar on and off connection problems until you reboot the phones.) For my part, I would have to observe exactly what it does, so I would have a better idea what to report. But this is just the phone suddenly becoming unable to make itself visible in the device list on the phone, much less connecting automatically. And then it takes a while, trying different things, usually including a phone and AP Max reboot. It's an intermittent thing -- so far, at least -- but it seems to have hit a lot of people. It might be something Apple could fix in an update, if they would.
