Preview resizing problem - Not saving correct file size in info....

Brand new M2 MacBook Air (Aug 22). I'm trying to resize photos using preview, been doing it for years on several iMacs.

The problem is it's resizing the file saving it in the new 800x600 pxl size (from 4000x3000), but when you go to info it's still in the original final file size of 3.5MB, BUT when you open it again in preview it is the new size and only 134kb...!!! The big deal is trying to upload it to my website, the website reads it as 3.5MB and refuses to upload (3MB max per pic). Even though it's definitely 134KB. File size in info says 3.5MB....

I run an e-commerce site and cannot upload any photos now! Only reason I bought the new Air to manage a second website....!!!

Please help - I'm pulling my hair out and thinking about returning the Air.....

Hey there, JinjaV6!

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities.

You may need to reduce the file size manually.

  1. To do that:
  2. In the Preview app on your Mac, open the file you want to change.
  3. Choose Tools > Adjust Size, then select “Resample image.”
  4. Enter a smaller value in the Resolution field.
  5. The new size is shown at the bottom.

To reduce the file size of multiple images at the same time, display the images in the same window, select them in that window’s sidebar, then choose Tools > Adjust Size.

You can learn more here: Resize, rotate, or flip an image in Preview on Mac - Apple Support

Kindest regards.

This does not work...!!! I've tried everything - Please reread first post.....

The MacBook Air refuses to save below 3.5mb NO MATTER what I input into preview. This is also the same for all my other photo resizing software inc - Pixelmator Pro, Photoshop and Lightroom.....!!! Nothing will reduce the file size below 3.5mb.

Surely this is a system or setting problem somewhere...... I am pulling my hair out as this laptop is pointless to me as it is...!!!

Thanks for getting back to us, JinjaV6. It’s appreciated.

We’d like for you to restart your Mac in safe mode. Not only is this an isolation step, it can potentially resolve the problem: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support. This is why:

Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed.

You’ll want to follow the steps under "Apple silicon” to enter safe mode. Once there, test the issue. Whether or not it happens while your Mac is in safe mode, restart normally to exit.

If the edited photos decreased in size while in safe mode, test the issue again after a normal restart.

After you’ve completed testing, you’ll want to follow one of the sections below:

  1. If the issue continued while in safe mode, follow the steps under "If the issue continues in safe mode”.
  2. If the issue did not happen while in safe mode, but continued after normally restarting, you’ll want to follow the steps under "If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode”.

Please let us know the results when you're able.

All the best.
