Photos Application (MacOS) heavily compressing Images, and reducing sharpness.

To whom it may concern,

I use the Photos application on macOS for quick photo and video editing. However, recently I have noticed that the application has been compressing my videos by a significant amount, making my footage unusable. This issue is frustrating as it has never occurred before. Previously, the original images were sharp and showed no signs of compression, but now they are filled with blurry artifacts. Additionally, the file sizes have been drastically reduced, for example, from 100MB to 25MB.

I have attempted various solutions, including:

  • Exporting videos and images to Finder
  • Restarting my computer
  • Reinstalling macOS
  • Updating to the latest software

Has anyone else encountered this problem? If so, have you discovered any effective fixes? If an Apple advisor comes across this message, I would like to inquire if Apple is aware of this issue.

Peter

Hello Etresoft,

Thank you for your reply. I do understand from where you are coming from from however I have to disagree with you on “Photos is not for video, so there's that.”

There are some reasons why:

  1. When you take a video on iPhone or Mac it ends up in the photos app.
  2. If it was specifically made for photos you would not have an option to import, let alone edit videos.
  3. iMovie has a 100% intentional option to import video from the photos application.
  4. A video is a series of photos so it does make sense that apple that apple would want to make a universal app for both photo, and video.

Also, I am not talking about iCloud, I am talking local files that are on the disk.

This still doesn’t make sense when I could edit and export high resolutions, and now I can’t

Peter

Hello léonie,

Thank you for your insight. I do the same thing when exporting. Except when I do it as-well, the file size is reduced to only 31% of what the original was. Here are snapshots of it step by step:
