Mac Mail problem

Mail on my MacBook Pro: the inbox deletes, or doesn't save, any messages over 3 or 4 weeks old. I also have an old MacBook (OS10.6.8) which uses Microsoft Entourage for emails, which remain forever if you want them to. So I'm still using the old MacBook for emails, which is ok, but if it dies how do I retrieve emails on the new one?

Any ideas?
