AirPods “coverage expired” question

My boyfriend gave me apple AirPods for Christmas 2021. They started saying “coverage expired” about a month ago. Was he supposed to buy some sort of extended warranty or do I need to do that? And why would I have to buy more coverage? Mad about this.

AirPods have 1 year standard warranty.

Warranty starts with the original sale.

If he bought them from an unauthorized retailer, the warranty started when they bought them from Apple.

You can’t buy additional coverage, AppleCare plus can only be purchased within 60 days of original sale.
