This issue has existed since the M1 machine was new in November 2021 and indeed is a replacement for the original which had a M1 motherboard issue. So it has been switched on and off an infinite number of times. There is only one user, me. So to recap ever since Monterey 12.01 upto 12.5, Auto history delete options in Safari have never ever worked only manual deletions work.

JMAMBP14,

Thank you.

Please continue with creating a new user account on your Mac. Testing in a new user will tell us if user specific permission issues may keep Safari from properly deleting history automatically. Be sure to log out of your current user account completely before testing in the new account.

"1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .

If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.

2. Click the Add button  below the list of users.

3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.

    • Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.
    • Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.
    • Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to or change settings on the computer. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.

For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.

4. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.

5. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.

6. Click Create User.

7. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:

    • For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”
    • For an administrator, select “Allow user to reset a password using Apple ID.”
    • Use Sharing preferences to specify whether the user can share your files and share your screen."

Hey JMAMBP14,

Are you under the General tab in Safari Preferences? If so, are you only getting the pop-up when you select Manually?

Do you experience the same issue when you open Safari > click History from the Safari Menu > and then Clear History. A drop box will appear with different options. This information will help us isolate the issue. To see more, click here: Clear your browsing history in Safari on Mac.

We'll wait to hear back. Take care.

Greetings JMAMBP14,

Try to power off and restart the Mac. Follow these steps: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support. We know this sounds like a simple step, but sometimes a fresh restart can correct unusual behavior that may arise.

Does the issue happen with a specific user? If you do not have an alternate user you may need to create one to test with. Here's more information on that process: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support. This will indicate if the problem is system-wide or feature/setting specific for a user.

Cheers!

JMAMBP14,

To make sure we're on the same page, you tested in a newly-created administrator account and found that your Safari history is not clearing automatically "After one day" in that account either, correct?

If that's correct, we recommend getting in touch with Apple directly to look into this issue further. You'll find contact options in this link: Apple Support

Have a good one!
