itunes running but not displaying on win11

My Dell OptiPlex Windows 11 PC rebooted after an, I assume, Windows update today (8/4/2022). After rebooting, I tried running iTunes but nothing appeared on my monitor. But, Task Manager showed iTunes (7 tasks) running. Also, doing an Alt-Tab showed the iTunes window but choosing it did not display it.

I have done the following:

  1. Rebooted again.
  2. Ran iTunes as Admin.
  3. Uninstalled and then installed iTunes (from Windows app store).
  4. Looked at various voodoo incantations that others have suggested for this apparently common problem. Tried looking for rogue .dlls and deleted various files in various directories. Nothing worked.

Has anyone else updated Windows this week and had the same problem?

I was thinking more in terms of you trying the previous build to the current one, or perhaps the one before that. Here are the four 64-bit builds that precede 12.12.4.1.

Start with 12.12.3.5 and see if that works correctly for you. It should be able to read your primary .itl file.

Hi danseto,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

You mentioned that you have uninstalled and then installed iTunes from the Windows app store, but did you do it in the correct order? If you're unsure, let's first have you start with making sure iTunes is up-to-date by following the steps in the link below in the section titled "On your PC."

Update to the latest version of iTunes

If you continue having issues, remove and reinstall iTunes by following the steps found here: Remove and reinstall iTunes and related software components for Windows 7 and later.

Be sure to uninstall the related software comments in the order listed in the article.

Please do not hesitate to reach back out to the community if you have questions or need any additional support.

Cheers!

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Thank you for the suggestion to use a more recent version of iTunes.

I uninstalled the current version 12.12.4.1 and installed 12.12.3.5.

Results: I am back to the original error of seeing it running in Task Manager and Alt-Tab but can't otherwise access iTunes. As before, if I use the 12.4.3 version of iTunes Library.itl, iTunes at least runs, although without any music after 2014.

Thus, the problem, from my point of view, is how to get iTunes, regardless of version, to read the gigabytes of music I have on my local drive, while using the iTunes Library.itl version from 12.4.3.

If I can't do that, I think I have two choices:

  1. Switch to another application for ripping and organizing music from my CDs.
  2. Wait until Apple finds a fix for whatever went wrong in iTunes Library.itl.

Any other ideas?

Thanks again for the help.

Regards,

Dan

  1. Installed 12.12.3.5 with no iTunes Library.itl file in the Music/iTunes folder.
  2. Install completed and iTunes ran correctly.
  3. Removed the new iTunes Library.itl file and replaced it with a previous version that didn’t work (i.e. only shows in Task Manager and Alt-Tab) and iTunes stopped working.
  4. Went back to working iTunes Library.itl file.
  5. Started iTunes and went to Files>Add Folder to Library
  6. Added /Music/iTunes/iTunes Media
  7. All music added to iTunes.
  8. Thought I was done until it happened again after running iTunes for three hours adding some new music from my CDs.
  9. Sigh. Did steps 1 through 7 and am testing if it happens again.

Thank you for the suggestions. I checked with MS and tried various things, but nothing worked.

So, I uninstalled the current version of iTunes and installed version 12.4.3 (Aug 1, 2016).

After installing, I tried running it but got an error:

The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes.

I decided to rename the .itl file identified above so as to keep it as a backup and started iTunes again. iTunes started! I then used the >Help>Check for Updates function and updated to the current version (version 12.12.4.1)

Although iTunes is now displaying correctly, none of the gigabytes of songs saved to my local drive are listed.

As a blind effort to recover things, I backed-up the new iTunes Library.itl file and replaced it with the original .itl file.

However, this resulted in the return of the original problem where iTunes is running but not displayed on the screen.

For now, I've returned to the new .itl file and am attempting to have iTunes scan my local drive. As soon as I figure out how to do that, I will be done *crosses fingers and knocks on wood*.

Work backwards through the links provided until you find one that works correctly. Try right-clicking the installer and using run as administrator. Once you have a recent version that opens correctly with a blank library try reconnecting it to your main .itl file.

You might also try holding down ctrl+shift as you launch iTunes to open it in safe mode to see if that helps with the odd display issue.
