I've an old external HDD with 3 partitions.
I would like to keep only one of them.
I've deleted all data on 2 and I wanted to remove those partitions and afterwards increase the size of the first one.
Thru the Disk Utility app the partition icon is not accessible and I cannot find the reason
I am pretty sure I'm missing something "simple" but cannot

You may not be able to do so depending on exactly how it was partitioned.
The simplest way to deal with it is to copy the data to another drive entirely, completely repartition the drive you have (which will result in the erasure of all data), then copy the data back to it.

I can't remember if this blocks it, but do you have Show All Devices set in the View popup menu.

All devices were shown, and I deleted everything and restarted from scratch.
