Deleted WhatsApp messages reappeared on Iphone

Why would all of my deleted WhatsApp messages (going back for years) reappear on my iPhone and how can keep this from happening again?

Whattsapp uninstall re-install - Messages only up to middle of December I just backed up my iPhone and made sure Whatapp was toggled on.
